Which leads me to add to my wholehearted endorsement of Gene’s call for libraries to make allowances for people to avoid play and games. The fact that family game night might, as Gene remarked, be a source of trauma is primarily an indictment of the state of those families – but given play’s links to health and the fact that games can heal and promote bonding and caring, it seems unwise to ignore the qualities of the games they are playing. It’s easy to take this as a joke – families fight over board games, oh well, It’s Only A Game – but if you dig even slightly into this, you find that some of these experiences are genuinely traumatic, as one would expect might be necessary to give someone a lifelong aversion to an entire medium. Monopoly is… as legendary for spawning bitter family fights and for dragging on interminably even though it’s obvious who’s going to win as it is for being widely played. Given my views on play, you won’t be surprised to learn that I asked the presenters about whether play experiences could qualify as the kinds of responsive, positive, engaged, and empowering interactions they described. I was attending professional development aimed at helping library staff support families from refugee backgrounds, and we were discussing the role that libraries and childcare staff (mostly the latter, based on the mix of the group) can play in helping often highly traumatised communities. A small increase in risk of harm, replicated many times on a massive scale, means harm is certainly occurring. As COVID-19 lockdowns unfolded around the world, and sales of games, puzzles, toys, and other playful artforms spiked, a friend asked me if I felt a sense of validation. And worst of all, a combination of the two, where other players essentially become supporting cast for a scripted victory that is neither earned, nor fun, nor remotely playful – a psychodrama rather than a game, toying with their victims rather than playing with them. Controlling bullies who insist everyone play their way, forcing people to make deals they don’t want and to keep playing even when they aren’t having fun.

We found that the reduced survival rate of ain-1 was suppressed by either reduction of age-1 function or loss of unc-31 function (Fig. 1 B and C), suggesting that a significant portion of the overall miRNA functions in L1 diapause is upstream of, or in parallel to, the InsR pathway. Previous studies indicate that the InsR pathway plays a dominant role in regulating L1 starvation survival and that reducing the activity of the insulin receptor daf-2, the PI3Kinase age-1, or the upstream regulator unc-31 results in increased L1 starvation survival rate (2, 3). The two ain-1 loss-of-function alleles displayed significant reductions in L1 starvation survival rate. We found that ain-1 but not ain-2 mutants displayed a significant reduction in L1 starvation survival rate compared with that of wild type (Fig. 1 A and D).

Over time, participants often find that being part of a group helps them build confidence, improve communication, and better understand their own needs in recovery.

To determine viability, 20-μL aliquots (60–100 worms) were placed every 3 d onto two 6-cm nematode growth medium (NGM) plates seeded with OP50, and the numbers of L1 worms were recorded as number of plated worms (Np). A total of 16–24 h later, the density of newly hatched L1 worms was adjusted to three to five worms per microliter S-basal. The eggs were transferred to plates seeded with HB101 and bleached again 3 d later.

What Role Do Support Groups Play in Mental Health Crisis Recovery?
I recommend turning it off to see how it impacts this specific image. In normally exposed images, this method can lead to oversaturation, so I usually reduce it using other modules like Color Balance RGB. The LAB tone curve is mostly me experimenting to see how it affects color saturation, particularly in the Blue and Magenta spectrum, which I often adjust.

The roles of InsRs have also been implicated in arresting the cell cycle in germ cells and a portion of somatic cells during L1 diapause (2, 4).

However, it remains unclear how, and to what extent, miRNAs coordinate animal survival and development in response to stresses. Unlike dauer diapause, L1 diapause is not accompanied by life cycle changes and has not been shown to require certain signaling pathways that control the formation of dauer diapause such as TGF-β signaling (daf-1, daf-7) and nuclear hormone receptor (daf-12) (2, 3). When late, first larval stage (L1) worms sense unfavorable conditions, they enter an alternative and long-lived larval stage called dauer larvae (or dauer diapause). The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans responds to starvation by entering developmental arrest at multiple stages of its life cycle (1).
They give people a way to stay engaged with their own care and allow families and clinicians to feel more confident in supporting them. They help people transition from more intensive care into everyday life, while still receiving regular encouragement. From peer-led insight to structured group therapy, support groups can be a steady and valuable part of every stage in the recovery journey.
